The Leading Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Secures the Premier Place.

At first glance, this work may look more like an arduous academic challenge than a new popular music album from an artist who just had a last hit featured a global pop icon. Split into four distinct movements and sung in 13 languages, it is a head-spinning symphonic opus that delves into female mystery, spiritual ascent, and physical change, frequently via the lens of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a romance—a topic handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—soars upwards here, carried by the constant presence of a full orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure audacity alone makes the work of other artists seem quite small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That this album manages to escape dry intellectual chin-stroking is nothing short of miraculous, with sole credit belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not her first project to fuse the past with the present, the stakes are far greater on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more pronounced. What really raises her fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of playfulness. Much like the iconic Björk at her height, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls you into its tornado. Even when she is tearing your heart in two, the listener still want to be alongside her for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This playful energy shines brightly during the stunning piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over several moments. Then, all the music drops silent, and we hear a spontaneous laugh and a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral surge crashes down with cartoonish force. The track immediately shifts to the frenetic single driven by galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The charm of this album is that you rarely quite understand—nor want to predict—what you will go next."

Almost every song concludes at a totally different place than where it started. A track examines the transient trappings of fame with a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused work starts off moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Of Art and Accessibility

A key achievement of Lux is straddling the line between bold innovation and broad accessibility. This is little surprise that the album has achieved the artist's first release to crack the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable pop songs. A song performed primarily in the English language swells on a chorus that seems to collect increasingly nagging melodies while it spirals skyward. This feat gets echoed by a different powerful ballad that grows and contracts, weaving layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of other heartbreak songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album is pop on a grand level, a hungry grasp for high Art amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its own inherent excess. It is a deep well of buried gems that takes time to fully explore but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous feast at which the characters around the table, some tipsy on holy wine, flit from conversations about historical figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. It is a contemporary musical from music's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
